Metal Business Card Branding with an Integrated NFC Function

The metal front provides a refined surface for a logo, contact details, graphic patterns, or an etched-through design. The PVC insert contains the NFC chip and may also carry printed branding, instructions, an NFC tap icon, or identification information where the design allows.

Because metal blocks the NFC signal from the front side, every card must be tapped from the back the side where the PVC chip card is installed. The NFC location should be clearly identified so recipients know where to place their phone.

NFC performance can vary with the phone model, phone case thickness, tapping position, card structure, and final artwork. Functional testing of the approved construction is recommended before bulk production.

NFC Contact Cards with Two Recessed NFC Insert Structures

Small Recess with Compact PVC NFC Insert - For a discreet NFC area, the metal back can be chemically etched with a small recess measuring approximately 25, 30, or 35 mm. The recess may be round or square, depending on the selected PVC chip card and artwork. The small self-adhesive PVC NFC insert is fitted into this recessed area. This construction leaves most of the metal surface visible and works well when buyers want the NFC component to occupy only a limited section of the card. However, the size of the antenna coil affects the reading distance. The chip is paired with a miniature antenna coil, typically 10–20 mm, similar to those used in mini stickers. The reading distance is very short—only about 0.5–1.5 cm—so the tag usually needs to be almost touching the back of the phone. It has very limited angle tolerance; even slight misalignment may prevent the phone from reading it.

Full-Back Recess with Large PVC NFC Panel - For designs requiring a larger printable area on the reverse, nearly the entire metal back can be etched to form a broad recess. A custom-sized PVC chip panel is then applied over this area. The larger PVC panel provides more space for printed instructions, contact information, brand graphics, or a clearly marked tapping zone. Its exact dimensions must be reviewed together with the metal card size, border width, artwork, and production tolerances. For full-back recess PVC panel, the chip is paired with a large antenna coil, typically 40–55 mm, about the size of a bank card. It provides the longest reading distance. A smartphone’s NFC reader can detect it from approximately 4–5 cm away. It has better angle tolerance, so it can still be recognized even when slightly misaligned.

Stainless Steel NFC Cards, Finishes, and Color Matching

Stainless steel is the recommended standard material for most custom metal NFC business card projects. Brass can also be quoted when its weight, color, or material character is specifically required, but it is less commonly selected because the raw material is more expensive. The common metal colors for NFC business cards include nickel color, gold color, black, rose gold color, natural stainless steel.

The PVC chip card can be produced in a color selected to coordinate with the metal finish. However, PVC and metal are different materials with different surface reflection and color behavior. A slight color difference is unavoidable and an exact match cannot be guaranteed.

This also applies to nickel-colored or natural stainless steel cards. Because the PVC chip insert has a naturally gray cast, the PVC and surrounding metal will still show some visible difference. Buyers should evaluate the complete card assembly rather than approving the metal and PVC colors separately.

Metal NFC Cards Custom Logo and Metal Design Options

1) Silkscreen and UV Printing - Logos, text, icons, and graphic elements can be applied by silkscreen printing or UV printing. Printing may be placed on the metal card, on the PVC insert, or on both surfaces, subject to the artwork, finish, print area, and required registration. 2) Chemically Etched NFC Recess - The NFC recess is produced by chemical etching. To accommodate the thickness of the PVC chip card, the target recess depth is approximately 0.45 mm. The final depth and fit must be confirmed according to the PVC component and approved production construction. 3) Etched-Through Openwork - Metal cards may include etched-through openings for logos, monograms, patterns, or decorative negative space. To maintain sufficient structure, the remaining metal lines around and within the openwork should be at least 1 mm wide. Narrow areas, sharp corners, NFC placement, and edge strength remain subject to artwork review. 4) Laser-Engraved Serial Numbers - Variable serial numbers or identification codes can be laser engraved on the metal area. This option is suitable for membership cards, limited editions, staff identification, serialized promotional programs, or controlled distribution projects. 5) Chemically Etched Recess with Printing - This method resembles soft enamel coloring but eliminates the need for meticulous hand-coloring. The result is a fast and impressive finish.

Custom Sizes for Different Brand Programs - The common finished size is approximately 85 x 54 x 0.8 mm with slightly rounded corners. The metal dimensions can also be adjusted for the project, with examples including 80 x 50 mm, 85 x 50 mm, and 80 x 54 mm. The PVC chip insert is not limited to one fixed format. Its size and shape can be coordinated with the selected small-recess or full-back-recess construction. Because card size, PVC dimensions, recess depth, border width, printing, and NFC performance affect one another, every non-standard layout requires an individual feasibility review.
